Long historyMy programming hobby goes way back to 1982-83 when I wrote in my first program (Moonlander) with VIC-20 Basic from a computer magazine program listing at my friends place (I didn't own a computer until 1985).My first own computer was a Sony MSX and its BASIC was awesome. From then on I've always created something by programming; games, utilities, APIs and web apps. The first game I designed and programmed was a sailing competition game where you were supposed to sail through checkpoints and avoid random whales. Later on I made a cannon firing game with real gravity calculations with help of my dad. I got pretty sweet trajectories plotted out. I've used a bunch of programming languages along the way like AREXX and BlitzBasic on Amiga (That's what Team17 used to create the first Worms game). I wrote a strategy game called Fantasy Wars with BB. The game featured a large map with countries, bases, castles and cities with medieval troops prancing around. When I got my first PC, I learned Turbo Pascal. With TP I created graphical UI API for my games and utilities like map editor, mech game and a bunch of role playing helper utilities for RP game masters. I had a long pause from programming when Windows became the dominating OS. In late 1990s, as the internet and www rose in popularity, I found Linux, and later Perl, and started making apps for the web with it. Not games though. In 2000s I created programs with Perl, javascript and LUA but they were web apps, utilities, interpreters, game addons and system maintenance programs. In 2019 I suddenly had plenty of time on my hands (unemployed), and I decided to start learning a game development IDE. I tested waters with Unity and UE. They weren't for me. But then found and settled with GDevelop because it just felt right. My first project was game master tool for a finnish roleplaying game called Praedor. Since then I've built a lot of stuff but nothing has been released because I still feel Im learning. Then came the GameJam. Rami asked if I wanted to join him making a game for the jam. When the theme was announced I had couple of ideas, we brainstormed more but ended up going with my first proposition of city being destroyed by earthquake and the players job is to rebuild it. That became our GameJam submission: Brick City - Earthquake Rescue. |
